About the project
The places we remember are part of our history.
Places We Remember is a map-based community history project built to preserve the everyday places that shaped our lives — restaurants, stores, schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, gathering places, roadside landmarks, and countless other places that might otherwise fade from view.
Why Places We Remember exists
Local history is often preserved through major events, famous buildings, and official institutions. But communities are also shaped by ordinary places: the diner everyone knew, the store where a family shopped for decades, the school that was replaced, the factory where generations worked, or the empty lot that still carries a story.
Places We Remember gives those places a geographic home where people can find them, share what they know, contribute photographs, and add personal memories.
Community-built, carefully reviewed
Members can add places, suggest updates, share memories, and contribute photographs. Contributions are reviewed so the public record remains useful, respectful, and tied to real places.
Gone, changed, or still here
A place does not have to be demolished to belong here. Places We Remember includes places that are gone, closed, substantially changed, and places that still exist but carry meaningful historical, cultural, or nostalgic importance.
Help preserve a place
The project becomes more useful as people contribute the places and stories they know.
